HNS History and Background
In the winter of 1998 Ray Uroda and Mike Shramek, Hockey Director at the time for Ice World, stared an in house program of Upper House and Lower House teams. They were small in number but the word spread fast. In the following two season 99/2000 and 2000 /2001, the numbers grew to two full teams in both the Upper House and Lower House divisions at Ice World. In November of 2001, Ray and Mike called their Upper House teams the Penguins and entered them into the then annual B.Y.H. Thanksgiving Tournament. The kids had a great time and loved competitive hockey. While the teams were going strong that summer Ray and Mike approached B.Y.H. to register our teams for the fall of 2002 under their USA Hockey ID number while Ice World retained ownership of the teams.
That partnership started us on our way. The first “North Star”, being north of the City teams were formed. Three teams: Squirt, Peewee and Bantam levels, competed in the Capital Area Rec League. We needed another coach though so Ray drafted Bob Goodwin from his adult hockey team to be the new head coach for the Peewees. The die was cast and the North Stars were set to soar! In 2003, the North Stars hosted the first ever CARL Cup Tournament at Ice World. The North Star Squirts took the Championship Cup that year.
Ice World recalled the North Stars back home in the summer of 2006. We obtained our own USA Hockey ID number and registered our own teams for the first time. The board worked tirelessly and obtained our Non Profit, 501 (c) 3 status. In April of 2007 we held our first travel tryouts and had two teams, Midget U18 and Mites. Since then, our number of travel teams have grown each year. At the end of the 2009-2010 season, Ice World turned over ownership of the rec teams to the Harford North Stars Organization.
Ray Uroda, Pat Uroda and Kim Kovacs founded the club. Ed Slusher, our current Hockey Director has worked tirelessly, side by side with our board to off the best possible hockey program.
Each and every year we strive to make it better than the last. We take on new projects. Our club has painted the locker rooms, built trophy cases, hoisted many banners on the Rink A wall. We’ve adopted highways, participated in parades, have been featured on TV, Cable and Radio. We’ve been in newspapers and magazines and hosted the first ever “Score for Schools” program in the State of Maryland. Our accomplishments amaze us and our goals are ever growing.
